There’s so much history that surrounds St. Patrick’s Day since it came to the United
States in 1737.
Some say St. Patrick gave a sermon from a hilltop that drove all the snakes from Ireland,
which is tough to believe, since no snakes were ever native to that country!
Originally St. Patrick’s Day was a holy Catholic day, but it’s evolved into a more secular
holiday in the United States.
Whatever your St. Patty’s Day tradition, it no doubt will include treats from Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods. Whether it’s a Killarney Jewel Cake (pictured here), once-a-year St. Patty’s Day cupcakes (also pictured, yum!) or cookies, or even a custom Ukrop’s cake with your favorite “lucky charm” on it—don’t forget to have some “home-baked” Ukrop’s goodness on your kitchen table.

Ukrop's St. Patty's Day Cupcakes. Now that's lucky.
Our “little leprechauns” just love these treats found at Martin’s in Richmond. We are so lucky: there’s no doubt.
Share your St. Patty’s Day traditions and Ukrop’s favorites—we’d love to hear about
them!

To many people, a cake is just another sweet treat expected at a birthday party. For many Richmonders though, it’s not really a cake, unless it’s a Ukrop’s cake! When I first moved here, I thought this was an exaggeration, but when we’d host a party at work for any reason, the coordinator always had to have a cake from Ukrop’s— one bite is all it took…and I immediately understood why.
After the retail stores were closed, I was thrilled to hear that we would still be able to get Ukrop’s cake through MARTIN’S. Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods bakes tens of thousands of cakes for special occasions every year including birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, and, yes, even weddings. Actually, there really isn’t an occasion necessary to enjoy that great-tasting, lip-smacking, finger-licking flavor: just treat yourself anytime and don’t feel guilty!
Haven’t had a Ukrop’s cake lately? We can fix that. We are giving away a gift card ($25 value) for a Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods cake to one lucky reader! ENTER HERE!
We’ll announce the winner by 3/10/11. Good luck!

My husband loves cupcakes. He’s always loved cupcakes. Lately I’ve seen “gourmet” cupcakes popping up all over the city with some interesting flavors. We’ve tried them all. So when somebody asked him which ones he liked best, he thought about it for a few minutes and then the answer was clear: Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods cupcakes. He’s been enjoying their cupcakes for as long as he can remember and they’re still his favorite. Couple that with their wonderful Valentine’s Day decorations and I have the perfect treat for my Valentine!
Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods holiday decorated cupcakes also make a festive and delicious treat to bring to any party or event you may be attending to celebrate Valetine’s Day.

All brides seem to be including something on the reception menu these days that wasn’t always seen: The groom’s cake. But actually this tradition isn’t new at all—it dates back to the 17th century!

Ukrop's Homestyle Foods bakes up thousands of cakes each year for lucky Richmond brides and grooms, like the groom’s cake shown above.
Historically it has been a rich dark fruit cake or was made to match the traditional “bride’s” or was even made to be the very top layer of the bridal cake, “drenched in brandy to preserve it for the celebration of the couple’s first wedding anniversary.” Neat!

Congratulations to Sharon S. who is the winner of the Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods Christmas Holiday Meal. It was Sharon’s story that was selected by associates during our recent holiday luncheon. We enjoyed reading each of the memories aloud after our meal. Making the decision was difficult as there were many heart-felt entries.
Thank you very much for participating and for supporting Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods with your business. All of us here wish you a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year!

Christmas Eve was full of tradition for Mike’s family and we share in many of them with our kids now. There was always a fire in the fireplace and they popped popcorn with an old corn-popper over the fire. His dad always read the original Night Before Christmas (no Rudolph!). And the only cookies they ever put out for Santa were Ukrop’s red and green Rainbow Cookies. Because you know if Ukrop’s cookies are your favorite they have to be Santa’s too!

When I first moved to Virginia from Pennsylvania years ago, my brother-in-law (30+ year Ukrop’s, associate now with MARTIN’s) kept going on and on about Ukrop’s White House Rolls and cakes, and how they have both been on the Christmas buffet for years.
I thought, “Really? What’s the big deal?”
I soon found out. We devoured two packages of soft, flaky White House Rolls with our meal, longing for more (but always reminded by mom not to spoil our meal by filling up on bread.) When the Santa cake hit the table it topped off our meal perfectly, and I knew what I had been missing out on all those years. It’s pretty neat that Ukrop’s has been a part of our family almost as long as I’ve been alive, and now Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods are on my childrens’ plates (lucky little devils!)
What’s even neater–now the well-loved, hometown White House Roll Clusters are available in 125 Giant and Martin’s stores in Pennsylvania! So there are lots of lucky little devils in Richmond and beyond who will savor them this holiday season.
