“Treat others the way you want to be treated.”
It’s a time-tested expression that guided us when we ran Ukrop’s Super Markets and one that remains at the heart of Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods.
The Golden Rule means care and attention in the products we make, but also working hard outside of our kitchen and bakery to impact the communities we serve through volunteer hours or financial contributions to causes that matter.
From the early days, Ukrop’s Super Markets was committed to serving the community—beginning when Mrs. and Mrs. Ukrop closed the store on Wednesday afternoons in the summer to help area farmers who were impacted by the shortage of help during World War II. Ukrop’s experienced significant growth and changes over the years (from 1963, when we added a second store, to the early 2000s when we employed 6,000 associates), yet the company remained steadfast to the principle of living The Golden Rule—treating others as you wish to be treated.
Our long-standing practice of donating 10% of pre-tax profits was formalized in 1987 in celebration of the company’s 50th anniversary and is a tradition that continues today to support organizations that help families and children across the region.
We view community service not as an obligation, but as part of who we are as a company.

The Annual Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k
A pep rally. A block party. A race. No matter what you want to call it, we all agree that the 10k has earned its reputation as one of RVA's favorite traditions! Every spring, 30,000 Richmonders and non-Richmonders alike come to run and revel along the grandest city avenue. Ukrop's has been proud to serve as the title sponsor since the race's inception in 2000.
Dominion Christmas Parade
For many Richmonders, the Dominion Christmas Parade kicks off the holiday season. The 34th annual parade will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 10 a.m. and feature holiday floats, marching bands, huge helium balloons, and, of course, Santa! Ukrop's serves as a contributing sponsor, so keep an eye out for Bobby, our CEO, driving the 1926 Ford TT delivery truck and tossing out White House Rolls!
